John Eaton - Locus Pocus

Fri 08 Dec - Tue 30 Jan

With a fascination for historical drawing techniques, Eaton took a particular interest in Alexander Cozen’s A New Method of Assisting the Invention in Drawing Original Compositions of Landscape (1785).

The publication described work achieved through the use of taché (stain) and chance. Coincidentally or not, these imagined landscapes were created at the time of Cook’s journey to the south and the concept of Terra Nullius. Conflating these notions in episodic heraldic-style hand cut pieces, Eaton utilises rubber.

This choice is partly for its colonial connotations but mostly for its quotidian materiality; that which separates us from both the land (soles and heels) and history (the ground being the receptacle of all physical life as we know it).
