Soft Chaos - TAFE Graduates' Exhibition 2026

Communing: Drawing and Video Installation - Rose Watts

Soft Chaos brings together a diverse group of emerging artists as they mark the culmination of their studies and the beginning of their professional creative journeys. This graduation exhibition celebrates a collection of accomplished works that demonstrate both technical skill and a strong commitment to conceptual inquiry.

Across a broad range of mediums, genres and approaches, each artist presents a distinct perspective, exploring ideas that reflect individual experiences, curiosities and interpretations of the world. While diverse in form and subject matter, the works share a thoughtful engagement with the concepts that underpin their making.

Communing attends to the silent, profound dialogues humans can share with the plant world.
Through a meditative drawing practice, Rose Watts explores the possibilities of interspecies communication. Drawing on data, sketches and recordings gathered at her Tanks Arts Centre residency (2025-26), Rose focused on the large fig tree (Ficus benjamina) in front of Tank 4. This tree, probably 60 to 65 years old, has grown amongst the man-made boundary of the Tanks. Returning to the same tree over many months the work unfolds through repetition, presence and the gradual accumulation of attention.
