Dennis Magee is a Brisbane based artist and educator of Northern Irish origin. His current project is creating a series of small watercolour and gouache paintings that explore the relationship between the complexity of forms, structures and lines in the Australian rainforest, and coincidental iconography in ‘Hiberno-Saxon’ style that adorns Irish medieval illuminated manuscripts.
Dennis’ conviction is that this imagery is of itself derived from the forms and structures of the long vanished, temperate rainforests that covered Ireland. Not unlike the Australian forests, those in Ireland were destroyed by the British colonisers, both for commercial gain and because of their cultural significance.
