Bamboo Connect by Co-Lab | Free Workshops for Kids
Sat 11 May
Activity for 7-12 year olds and their parents/carers
Hey kids, mums and dads, come and build a giant art installation out of bamboo for the Cairns Children’s Festival.
Bamboo Connect is the culmination of a series of fun and engaging kids and community inspired workshops held in March and April, with bamboo as the connecting building block. Bamboo is an ancient construction material and is still used today for all sorts of structures. The bamboo used in Bamboo Connect comes from stands that were originally planted by Chinese market gardeners on the slopes of Mt Whitfield for use as garden trellises. They are a popular feature of the Red Arrow walking track but need regular maintenance to keep from spreading too far into native bushland.
Children and their parents/carers are invited to participate in a collaborative bamboo connecting workshop. The theme of the workshop is ‘celebrating community at different scales’. Whereas bamboo-growth progresses from larger to smaller pieces, in the collaborative installation we start building with smaller branches and as participants gain familiarity and confidence in their craft, we user larger and larger scale materials, making connections in progressively larger communities, in the vast volume of the Tank.
This collaborative installation will then form part of Tinkering Tank at Cairns Children’s Festival, an exciting landscape in which families will be able to explore, tinker, and play!
