Visual Arts Program Guidelines

The Tanks Arts Centre and Botanic Gardens precinct is unique. No other facility in the world presents to the creative mind the same palette of physical, historical, cultural and environmental attributes. The Visual Arts Program is designed to stimulate a creative response to these attributes from artists, communities and visitors.

Artworks and projects produced and presented at The Tanks and Botanic Gardens should interpret and amplify the significance of the precinct, the city of Cairns and the people who live here, our cultures, our environment, our place in the region and our relationship with the rest of the world.

The Tanks Arts Centre charges for venue and equipment hire, marketing services, installation costs and a 20% sales commission. Wherever possible, Tanks staff can provide advice and assistance to exhibitors in raising funds to pay for those costs.

Standby Program

Free exhibitions are available to local artists (residents of the Cairns Regional Council local government area) who have joined the Standby Register.

These pre-approved artists may be invited, at any stage of the year, to prepare an exhibition at short notice. This invitation may be declined by the artist should they be previously engaged or unable to exhibit at that time without losing they place on the register.

Tanks will offer Standby artists free exhibition space, marketing and installation assistance in return for a 30% sales commission.
