The Tanks Arts Centre is located near the Barron River; the border for the Yidinji, Yirranganji and Djabugay Bama clans. As with most bordering lands, according to Bama custom, these areas are shared localities and crossover points. Cairns and Far North Queensland are home to a rich diversity of people with a strong sense of ethnic identity. Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Island, European, Asian and African communities all carry on social and cultural practices in a city that embraces a world of visitors every day.
The Tanks Arts Centre runs a Cultural Diversity program across all our activities, ensuring that the region´s rich and varied cultural fabric and history is reflected in what appears on our gallery walls, on our event stages, and in the audience itself.
Tanks supports and implements numerous arts and cultural programs and events for groups within the community, providing a shared space for groups to gather together in cultural exchange, as well as running projects throughout the region.
